Negative thoughts are like a parasite, it needs a host in order to grow. It feeds on the negative voices we all have in our heads.
I can’t do it
I won’t succeed
It’s too hard
I’m not smart enough
It (my work) is no good
I’m going to fail
No one will like me
Once those negative thoughts are in our head and we start to focus on them, we start to believe such negative things and it will reflect in our home life, school, work, and relationships.
Can we change this way of thinking?
Sure we can! It will take a little time because it is a habit that we have developed, and breaking a habit is sometimes tough but it is not impossible. We just have to train our thoughts from negative to positive. Instead of the negative phrases above, we need to focus on using positive voices;
I can do it!
I will succeed!
It’s not too hard!
I am smart enough!
It (my work) is good!
I’m going to pass
They will like me
When we start thinking negatively, we need to recognize such thoughts and step back. Why are we focusing on the negative? Can it be rephrased into something positive? Practicing positive thinking can have positive changes in our life. Having a positive attitude will help lead us to a happier way of life. We will notice it and so will the people around us.
Some other ideas for increasing positive thinking:
· Try to start a positive frame of mind as soon as you wake up. Play your favourite song, think of a happy thought. When you get up, say to yourself “Today is going to be a good day”.
· Surround yourself with other people who have a positive outlook.
· Take time to read books about positivity.
· When watching a TV show or a movie, watch something that will make you laugh and put you in a good mood.
“There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.” ~ W. Clement Stone
