What does "Menopause" mean Ladies?

What is Menopause?

Menopause ~ is defined as the state of an absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. The menopausal transition starts with varying menstrual cycle length and ends with the final menstrual period.

Perimenopause ~ means “the time around menopause” and is often used to refer to the menopausal transitional period. It is not officially a medical term, but is sometimes used to explain certain aspects of the menopause transition in lay terms.

Postmenopause ~ is the entire period of time that comes after the last menstrual period.

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when the function of the ovaries ceases. The ovary (female gonad), is one of a pair of reproductive glands in women. They are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. Each ovary is about the size and shape of an almond. The ovaries produce eggs (ova) and female hormones such as estrogen. During each monthly menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one ovary. The egg travels from the ovary through a Fallopian tube to the uterus.

The ovaries are the main source of female hormones, which control the development of female body characteristics such as the breasts, body shape, and body hair. The hormones also regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Estrogens also protect the bone. Therefore, a woman can develop osteoporosis (thinning of bone) later in life when her ovaries do not produce adequate estrogen.

At what age does a woman typically reach menopause?

The average age of menopause is 50 + years old. But there is no way to predict when an individual woman will enter menopause. The age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is also not related to the age of menopause onset. Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, but menopause may occur as earlier as the late 30s or early 40s or may not occur until a woman reaches her 60s. As a  “rule of thumb,” women tend to undergo menopause at an age similar to that of their mothers.

Perimenopause, often accompanied by irregularities in the menstrual cycle along with the typical symptoms of early menopause, can begin up to 10 years prior to the last menstrual period.

Symptoms of Menopause ~ Irregular vaginal bleeding, night sweats, hot flashes, weight gain, acne, wrinkles, fatique,Urinary symptoms, vaginal dryness, itching, sleepless nights. These are just some of the symptoms you may experience.

What can you do to cope better with the cycle of Menopause?

How often do you wake up drenched in sweat at 3am? Are you tired of it + tired all the time?  Do you feel like its just menopause and you must just deal with it. Don’t give up,  there are ways to deal with it!

Natural Path Doctor or Medical Doctor can help ~ Take the time and have your hormones checked by your Doctor. This will give you some idea where in your menopause cycle you are at. I know many ladies that have found relief by using progesterone cream. Check it out and talk to your Dr. about it and how to use it!

How to care for your Physical Body

Daily exercise is a MUST (Don’t talk about it, Do it! Working hard enough to make yourself sweat = releasing those cranky toxins from your body which = balancing out those nasty hormones that make you cranky.)After you have sweat it out, make sure you are eating a balanced diet everyday. When I say diet that is not what you may think it is , its NOT a grapefruit diet, protien only ,no carbs  etc diet…. “DIET” is the term used for eating regular healthy amounts of food. Note: during menopause its important to have adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D per day.I encourage you to see a nutritionist to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients and minerals in your diet daily that you need. Everyone is different based on weight, age and genetics/ family history.

When to EAT ! Eating every 2.5 to 3 hours from the time you wake up , will keep your energy levels  up and your hormones balanced. Write in a book or on your computer everyday for one month to keep track of when you are eating and how you feel before and after you have eaten. This can really help you to see the cycle that your body is in and then you will have a better idea of how and where to make healthy changes for yourself . Every bad habit can be replaced with a good habit. It takes 4-6 weeks to get your system worked out. So give it time and commit to making the changes that will help you to strive and thrive in your life. Here we have talked about how to help your physical body now we need to help your emotional self.

How are you taking care of yourself emotionally? Do you take the time to talk with a close friend about how your feeling? Do you bottle up your emotions and in return become ill? It is so important to speak about how you feel. So many women can take the opportunity to grow into there personal inner power as they reach there 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.  I view this as visualizing this as a shedding of the first and second part of life. ( We had childhood, teenage hood, parenthood in early years) Now you have finished those stages of growth. Now you can honor yourself with a new stage of life. If you are a mom that had her babies young then this is your time now. You may be a Grandma now and so happy to be one but its still your time to step back – let your kids parent there kids and learn to plan or set goals to achieve things that you have always wanted to do. Make that bucket list of the most memorable things you can achieve from now forward. Make those appointments today that make you feel good and show up to them. ( Treat yourself to a New hair cut, make-over, spa days, book a holiday or travel around the world, taking a sewing class, joining a group event, getting your licence to drive, learn to mediate, embrace your spiritual self, whatever it is you can do it!) Stop making excuses! Of course there are things that stall us today like husbands, kids ,work and money most of all. Guess what there are still ways to meet your goals. Ask for guidance and it will appear to show you the way.The only one holding you back is YOU. You are stepping into a wonderful part of your life. I find the ladies who come to me that feel stuck ,run down and over weight are the ones who suffer the most from menopause. Why? because they are resisting the natural process of life. This is your time to shine !Let yourself plan your escape from being stuck in the world of menopause. This is only a stage in life.Don’t allow menopause symptoms to control you. Give yourself permission to move forward and enjoy your life.
